This Weeks Book Review

When Caleb was a baby, I had been working full time for many years. So, you can understand how antsy I would get while sitting there and breastfeeding. I had sworn off soap operas after I had Maya, because I would  become obsessed with watching them. So, I had little to do except sit there. (this was before I had a smartphone, iPad, etc) Every week, I had started taking Maya to the library story time, and one day I decided to get myself a book. So I randomly selected a book by JD Robb, called” Survivor In Death.”

From the first page of the book, I was absolutely hooked into this book. It was so, so good. And that was when I rediscovered my love for reading books. I also discovered that this was book # 20 in the series, so I went back and read every single In Death book. Needless to say, I was never bored while breastfeeding again!

But I am actually not here today to talk to you about that series (although it is awesome, and you should definitely check it out). I am here to tell you about a book that I read last week ” Girl, Wash Your Face“. I had seen it in the store, but I wasn’t really sure what it was about. Then, another blogger who had just finished reading it was telling me that I had to read it. So, as soon as my Audible credit for August was ready, I bought the audio book. 

This book was so good, that I went back and listened to some of the chapters already. The author, Rachel Hollis, does such a great job articulating the lies we tell ourselves all the time. She gets deeply personal, and you can actually hear the passion in her words as she reads the book. This book has really gotten me thinking about so much in my life, and has really convicted me to make some changes in my life.

Chapter 2 is a Game Changer

 It is entitled, “The Lie, I’ll Start Tomorrow”. In this chapter, Rachel talks about breaking promises to yourself. It can be something as small as hitting the snooze button when you decided to wake up early the night before. Or deciding you are going to exercise 3 times a week and never doing it. She points out that by breaking promises to yourself, you train your brain that you are not to be believed. It gets easier and easier to not do the thing you told yourself you would do. 

This really blew my mind, because I am the worst about really wanting to do something, but never quite getting around to it. I didn’t realize that it was having such a profound effect on my life, my ambitions, my dreams, etc, until she pointed it out in this way. It’s only been a week since I finished this book, but I have gotten up with my alarm every day this week. It’s a small change, but keeping this small promise to myself is a really good start. 

I could go on for days…

Listen, I could go on and on and on about this book and the profound wisdom that Rachel has shared in it. But then, I might ruin the book for you, so I will just say: YOU NEED TO GET THIS BOOK! Why I Made Vegan Queso Dip

Here is the story of how a meat eater came to be making a Vegan Queso recipe:

A long time ago, in a house across town, a very pregnant woman got really, really sick one day. From that day on, she vowed to never drink milk, and only eat a little bite of ice cream every now and then. It was really hard for her, because she loved milk and ice cream with all her heart. Her only consolation was that she could still eat cheese in moderation.

But one day many years later, her world came crashing down and she had to give up cheese too! It was almost too much to bear! In her desperation, she started looking for something she could replace cheese with! Fake grocery store cheese was expensive and disappointing! Soaking (expensive) cashew’s all day? Please. 


But then, one summer day, she came across a recipe for Vegan Queso Dip. She was very skeptical, and also not vegan. But she was desperate, so why not?, she asked herself. It turned out that she actually had all but one of the ingredients already! And the list of ingredients wasn’t a mile long either! It was almost too good to be true! So, she set off to the store to buy the one missing ingredient : Eggplant!

And that friends, is the story of how I came to be making a Vegan recipe today. I am sure most of you know, that I am very much a meat eater! Especially if you have followed my blog for any length of time. So don’t worry guys, I am not going Vegan on you! But, I had to share this recipe with you, because it is actually good! So if you can’t eat dairy either, starting today you CAN eat chips and queso!! 

I found this recipe on Minimalist Baker, and I am impressed! I literally had to make myself put it away. (Although, it was made with a vegetable, so I don’t really feel that bad.) So, there is a chance that you may see me reviewing some more of her “cheesy” recipes. You can find the recipe here.

I was a little ill-prepared this morning and didn’t have quite enough almond milk, so I added a little chicken broth to mine to make sure I had enough liquid. So mine wasn’t actually Vegan… But, as I was eating it, I also thought that it would be good with some chili mixed in or even adding a little ground beef with the rotel, so you may also see some follow up posts about that. 

Now, you may be wondering “But what about the husband and kids, did they like it?” Well, I haven’t actually shared it with them yet, but when I do I will edit to let you know! However, if by chance they don’t like it , well : More for me!
